Maine Inspiration

This light-filled space is the weekend and holiday residence of a Thai couple and their three adult daughters. There’s an air of ease and relaxation about it. Although the kitchen area is relatively compact, everything is logically ordered and close to hand. It’s this family’s second Poggenpohl kitchen, so they chose it for its proven durability as well as its understated design.

When the owners of this New England home decided to renovate their beachside property they chose the muted colours, traditional furniture and natural materials that are characteristic of America’s eastern seaboard. They describe the colour scheme as being inspired by sand and sea, and the relaxed, appealing design captures the mood to perfection.
The wife and daughters all love to cook, and the family enjoys both Thai and western-style food.

They frequently entertain friends so the kitchen sees plenty of use. The owners found the Poggenpohl design team very helpful when it came to planning and choosing the kitchen. The island unit ensures that the cook or cooks can stay part of the conversation while preparing meals. Everything they need for is close at hand. Open shelves match the look of the living area, uniting the two areas and retaining the open and airy feel of the room.

Their Poggenpohl designer recalls that the major challenge was to achieve an ergonomic, logical and accessible layout in a limited area. Poggenpohl’s bespoke drawer dividers and space-efficient corner cupboards help make the best possible use of every square metre. As the property is part of a high-rise condominium, installation and ventilation had to be carefully planned.
For the owners, the result has the cosy and homely feel of a Maine beachfront residence but with the convenience and functionality of a family home. Recently a friend was so impressed by their kitchen that she too has decided to choose Poggenpohl for her new house. New England style and German craftsmanship clearly has global appeal.
