Relaxation Therapy

Forty minutes’ drive from Auckland, this Orewa beachfront home is a calm weekend retreat for its owners. It’s a tranquil place to relax, unwind and let the pressures of the week drift away – and their kitchen strikes just the right note.

The owners of this property are hard-working baby boomers in their sixties, a husband-and-wife team who run a busy acoustics consulting company. They wanted a place to leave the cares of business behind. A recent renovation of their weekend retreat gave them the opportunity to create a comfortable, modern and open area for cooking, dining and relaxing that is connected via a timber deck directly to the white sand beach. The owners were looking for a simple, uncluttered, unfussy style of kitchen in keeping with the location. They were attracted to the balance and purity of the kitchen designs on display at the Poggenpohl Auckland studio and were equally impressed by the quality of their construction. Working with their Poggenpohl designer, they commissioned a contemporary kitchen from the Porsche Design Kitchen range that integrates seamlessly with the open-plan living area of the home.

For their choice of colour, the nearby Pacific Ocean led them to specify a sea-blue finish on the highgloss door fronts that they combined with aluminium edging. The unique design of the Porsche Design Kitchen with its aluminium-framed cabinets creates a sense of engineered precision. It’s a modern, clean and bright look, especially with the light reflecting off the high-gloss finish. At the same time, the blue has warmth that’s comfortable to live with on cooler days and when the nights draw in. Compared with the previous kitchen, the new Poggenpohl design features deeper worktops, more storage and a cooler, more contemporary look. While the rear of the kitchen provides plenty of storage space in the tall units, the worktop that projects into the room is low, as is the living room furniture. This gives the room a greater sense of space and allows them to enjoy sea views while they’re preparing food or enjoying a coffee.

The couple both enjoy cooking – the wife cooks simply, using the fresh ingredients that are so abundant in New Zealand, while her husband pitches in with his family-famous pastries and pies. The owners love entertaining their children and grandchildren at the weekend retreat and find it a relaxing, casual and therapeutic place, where they can leave business worries far behind. It’s easy to keep clean too – neither of them worries when the grandchildren walk in from the beach with sandy feet.
