Cupcakes and Heavy Metal

With its striking modernist exterior of glass and copper, Rammamere House looks like it belongs in a movie. Step inside though, and the aroma of freshly-baked cakes – and the sound of guitars - will soon tell you this is a living, breathing family home. And the hub of family life is the kitchen.

Creating a stunning architectural showpiece wasn’t what the owners of this spectacular property originally had in mind when searching for a new home back in 2008. But after looking at many other houses they fell in love with this rural home. The owners were avid viewers of the UK TV programme Grand Designs, so they contacted one of the featured architects. They asked his practice to submit plans for a spacious, contemporary family home. Taking just over three years from start to finish, the finished house is everything they could have hoped for and family life centres around the Poggenpohl kitchen. A long and imposing island unit equipped with sinks, storage cupboard and

hob faces out towards the courtyard that is accessible via the large glass sliding doors. Because every exterior wall of the house is glass from floor to ceiling, the owners also specified a central ‘wall’ running parallel with the island unit that contains four ovens, fridge, freezer, wine cooler and cabinets. Plans for the kitchen, prepared by the Poggenpohl studio in St Albans, progressed in tandem with construction. Colours and materials were chosen to harmonise with the rest of the space. The exterior of the building is glass and copper, with dark grey flashings, so the owners decided to keep the interior neutral to blend with the outside.

A fitness instructor for over 20 years, the lady of the house recently struck out in an entirely new direction. Her business, The Cupcake Kitchen, creates cupcakes for weddings, birthdays and other celebrations. The Poggenpohl kitchen is her workplace as well as part of her home. She notes that the designer at Poggenpohl St. Albans worked with the builders and architects right from the start. This was helpful in terms of planning the working area, from sink to cooker to fridge to ovens. When it came to storage – for example, the things that she needs when cooking every day versus items that she may only need from time to time – the designer was able to guide her to create a logical and ergonomic layout that makes everyday cooking a pleasure.
One suggestion that proved popular was a pair of fridge and freezer drawers within the island unit. The family use these for storing fruit, smoothies and ice cream, the everyday on-demand items for a family that includes a nine-year old boy, 14-year-old girl and their eldest son, aged 19, an aspiring heavy metal rock star whose guitar riffs can often be heard echoing around the home. Their mother can’t resist mentioning another inspired suggestion from the Poggenpohl team: a steam oven. “I didn’t think I’d use it much but it’s brilliant. You can cook everything in there, cakes, biscuits, roasts… it keeps everything moist.” In the cupcake business, you need all the competitive edge you can get.
