Peak of Perfection

When you are near-neighbours to Europe’s highest mountain, there can be no excuses for not making the most of your surroundings. The owners of this beautiful mountain lodge in Chamonix are originally from North America, and have converted their cottage to a high specification holiday home.

The well-equipped Poggenpohl kitchen shown on the next few pages was installed as part of wider-scale conversion of the property. The firm of architects who created and oversaw the building recommended a designer from the Poggenpohl studio in nearby Annemasse for the kitchen project. The decision was swiftly made, because the owners already knew of Poggenpohl’s high reputation. Although they had ideas of their own for their new kitchen, the owners were open to the designer’s suggestions on layout and equipment. The finished kitchen is in a U-shaped layout facing the living and dining areas, so that even when entertaining the owners can enjoy the spectacular mountain views through the picture windows. features a large worktop with an integrated induction hob. Originally, the owners had wanted the island to feature a small dining area but were persuaded by their designer to locate seating elsewhere. This solution provides maximum storage space in the kitchen zone. The kitchen design had to harmonise with the rustic setting and natural stone and wood of the cottage. The smart yet understated design combines a pin-brushed veneer in terra for the cabinets with Corian worktops and splashbacks in bone. The owners are keen cooks, and their requirements included three ovens, a five-ring induction zone, two dishwashers and a mighty 124 cm-wide American fridge.

Delivering and installing the fridge presented Poggenpohl Annemasse with a logistical problem as the kitchen was fitted in winter, limiting access to the property for heavy trucks and lifting equipment. In the end the fridge was carefully delivered to the property on the front bucket of a farm tractor, and unloaded with the help of eight strong men. It now has pride of place against the back wall of the kitchen, its gleaming stainless steel doors bouncing light back into the room. All installation and commissioning was handled by Poggenpohl Annemasse, working with the architects to ensure smooth and timely progress of the project. As the designer explains, “We handle every aspect of the kitchen, from planning to handover. A beautiful design is worthless if the execution lets it down.” The owners use the cottage as a holiday home, whether for a weekend break or the Christmas vacation. The open-plan layout means that they’re able to entertain guests in a relaxed way, handling the
cooking and the hosting duties at the same time. And the highlight of the project? Perhaps the views of Mont Blanc are the true highlight in this Alpine home. But the way the sleek, well-equipped kitchen integrates within the relaxed, rustic-themed living space is also a cause for admiration.

In dit Russische landhuis is het kleurenpalet uiterst beperkt. De eigenaren hebben hun architect vanaf het begin verzocht een modern, minimalistisch huis te ontwerpen dat de ligging op het platteland zo goed mogelijk laat uitkomen. Binnen vormt de zwarte hoogglanslak een markante achtergrond voor de bloemen, planten en kunstobjecten.

Dit prachtige landhuis midden in een Noors bos werd voor de huidige eigenaren gebouwd. Het echtpaar bewoont het samen met hun 18-jarige tweelingzonen. Het is idyllisch gelegen. Een grote gezinskeuken maakte van meet af aan deel uit van hun plannen.
